Quick question....is Vista really as bad as everyone says? Yea I'm curious about this as well I've had an upgrade copy sitting on my shelf collecting dust since January. I've been waiting to start hearing that it was on the up an up before I installed it but I'm growing impatient. I'm probably just going to put it on my laptop, once I upgrade the ram, can't do too much damage there. ::waits for Aerie to come in and list her complaints::

Mr. Shywriter, a dedicated Bill Gates detractor, just got a new computer with the dreaded Vista. He's not crazy about it but has come to terms with it-- no major crashes yet. He's got some computer chops, though, and probably was able to fool it into doing some things most of us amateurs couldn't manage... My "computer chops" are limited to my current "safe mode with networking" . I'll be giving my laptop one final exorcism today and if that doesn't work I am probably looking at a new PC with the dreaded Vista.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but since we moved the PCs over to Vista things have never been smoother. I did of course have to purchase a few bits of software due to incompatibility issues, but apart from that, all's good. Touch woodMy Macs of course always run completely trouble free. ;D

YES
If you can't help use a Mi$%%#soft OS, stick with XP. I'm having a Oh-how-i-hate-Bill moment, having purchased 8gb ram for my baby only to discover that Xp 32bit only can manage 3gb at best... I've spent most of the weekend hunting down new codecs and drivers for my (waaaaay too many) apps in order to install XP 64bits...
And Vista is WORSE...

Sheesh. It's gonna be a loooong December... Some of us dislike Bill generally for the repeated Microsoft attacks on up and coming competition that they wipe off the map, thereby making the world safe for their mediocre products...

I thought I was being fairly civil. Its not even about Bill, if your going to buy RAM you need to take a good look at what you got to make sure your getting the right type and the right amount. Some of us dislike Bill generally for the repeated Microsoft attacks on up and coming competition that they wipe off the map, thereby making the world safe for their mediocre products... What up and coming competition are you speaking of? There hasn't really been brand new OS in 20 years. TBH Bill and his cronies aren't doing so hot these days. Mac is doing better than they have in decades, Mozilla is a more than worthy contender too with there counters to Outlook and Explorer. Google is starting to step on there toes as well. Hell Mozilla is practically a non-profit company and there doing exceptionally well. I really didn't come into this intending to defend Microsoft, but I find it hard to condemn a company whose products I use, for the most part without complaint. I don't mean to be cranky about it, because its not something to get worked up about, but I call it like I see it.

I'm off to find a "throwing rotten tomatoes" emoticon.

Hey, i don't mind criticism, rotten tomatoes or farting in my general direction, if such is your mood ;D. After 15 years in retail, unflattering comments don't even faze me anymore...one time someone threw an old UNIX terminal at me, so... And i know i should've checked before buying, but; A) I never considered that an OS that requires a MINIMUM of 1gb just to get out of bed in the morning, and 2gb to work more than two heavy duty apps at once would have that limitation, and B) it was an impulsive decision; what can i say, i have a little shopaholic in my cocktail . Drives my wife nuts... I've spent a good part of the weekend kicking miself over this...and she was only glad to help Thanks for the support tho', Aerie!!!

Thanks for all the replies to my Vista question. The exorcism went well as can be expected and my laptop is still alive and breathing. I have however gotten it into my head that I need a desktop as well , trying to convince myself that it is my patriotic duty to spend money in these troubled economic times . That plus they are shiny and new . Anyways at least this way I will have time to go out and hunt for a good price.

I look forward to a new OS sooooooooooo much - can hardly handle the excitment. The Vista was a dud compared to others. Wait a minute - there was ME and that was a dud. My tech guy told me to ignore ME. Anyhow, now I'm up for anticipating "7"
