Have you seen the movies nominated? Or some of them? Talk about your favorite - or who you think deserves to win.

The only films I care about are the Hurt Locker and Inglorious Basterds and I hope between them they win all there respective categories. I know the majority of this bored is composed of quite a few Sci-Fi junkies that will probably be routing for Avatar and District 9 and while I respect the hell out of District 9 for its originality, I couldn't care less for Avatar. While I've been known to enjoy a few films simply for their visual beauty, I generally go for films with great characterization and narrative excellence. Avatar to me feels like Pocahontas and Dances With Wolves blended together and filmed with the aesthetic of a lava lamp.

Have you seen the movies nominated? Or some of them? Talk about your favorite - or who you think deserves to win. Oh, wow! I was going to come apologize because as usual, I hadn't seen any of the nominees -- but then I read Mr. Clark's post and learned I was wrong in my assumption that District9 was in last year's crop. So then: I'm like Mr. C with his favorites, I hope it wins every award for which it's nominated, and I'll do him one better and pull for a few write-ins! ;D ;D I already gushed about it here but oh yeah, it deserves to pull in some serious awards -- it was compelling and well-done. Assuming Avatar going to run everyone else off the block -- I haven't seen it and I suspect I may not, even though I'm one of those sci-fi junkies: I give Cameron lots of credit for the new and improved processes he developed to make the movie, and was really excited about seeing it. But then I saw a trailer (at a real thee-a-tur, so on one o' them BIG screens for full effect ) it was impressive, and gorgeous -- and two minutes of it was enough. The plot (yeah, unfair to go just on the trailer + reviews and summaries, but they do tell the tale) is not new or original, it's the same old same old "noble and preferable indigenous population should prevail but needs white man/Christian man's/civilized man's help to survive." Too bad they didn't get as creative with the story as they did the production. (Honestly, the trailer that has me squealing like a fangirl is the remake of Karate Kid -- almost like squealing for the original! I do love me some David & Goliath superhero action, and the remake seems to have a nice blend of sticking to what was good about the original, and upping the stakes by having breathtaking scenery and photography. Doubt we'll be here discussing it for next year's Oscars, but ya never know! )

I'm seriously jonesing to see Inception, while some might consider it sci-fi it appears to me more as a psychological/philosophical mind bender. The vague hints the trailer gives about the plot focusing on the power of ideas is something I think could be explored in a variety of fascinating ways. Its also a film that looks like it has a magnificent visual styling that reminds me of Michael Mann's amazing visual styling. I get the same kind of giddy goosebumpy feeling watching that trailer that I had watching the Dark Knight trailers, you just know that even thought you can't see it theres a narrative depth that pushes the boundaries.

I'm rooting for Inglorious Basterds in case you couldn't tellIt looks good; have been wanting to see it, but you know... Me neither, but was told it's enlightening about which fingers Germans use to indicate three. ;D Saw Harry Potter, 'Avatar' (three thirds of it) and 'A Serious Man'. I want 'A Serious Man' to win something, great movie (the ending though, great move but gah!) but don't think it will have a realistic chance in the same category as 'Avatar' and 'Inglorious Basterds' Seems to me that Avatar is getting a similar hype as 'Toy Story' back when, all the attention on the break-through new technology of first entirely computer-made / first convincing 3D movie, the story itself being secondary to the device used for telling it. Harry Potter was good but no Oscar material and really want to see “The White Ribbon”....

Mr.Clark
Then don't. Take it to the movie thread or start a new one. This will be archived by the end of the week and your very interesting remarks will be lost in the dungeon. ;D
I've seen all the movies as I always do. And I have opinions. One of them is that Inglourious Basterds is twice the movie that The Hurt Locker is pretending to be.
I think it's because TPTB thought the competition between James Cameron and an ex-wife would be good for ticket sales.
I've seen Avatar three times at IMAX and it is probably my 2nd favorite movie of all time. I never took my eyes off the screen and didn't take a bite of popcorn or milk duds. I absolutely love James Cameron for not trying to intellectualize the film. He kept it fun and intriguing. I thought the Batman movies would influence him to make it all dark, dreary and dumb.
Thank you, Jim. I love you and George Lucas more than any film maker.
I want Colin Firth to win for a A Serious Man not only because he deserves it, but he is my favorite actor on the planet and has been since I first saw him when I was a child of seven.
The Jeff Bridges movie was ruined for me by Maggie Gylinjiggy, or whatever.
I want The Cove to win for best documentary because I think it's better than the other four.
I don't really care about the show and I'm not even staying home to watch. I'll watch it later in the week without commercials.

One of them is that Inglourious Basterds is twice the movie that The Hurt Locker is pretending to be. See this is why it would be interesting to get those opninions, I would have never pegged you for a Tarantino fan. I thought the Batman movies would influence him to make it all dark, dreary and dumb. Maybe I spoke to soon about wanting those opnions , jheebus again with the Batman hate? It's been two years, you still haven't gotten over it?

i still think that co-host steve martin should come out in his old white 3-piece suit and arrow through his head...kick it old school for the night Martin is the only thing that got me thinking about watching this year but I think I'll skip the show and watch any funny parts online tomorrow. Speaking of award shows, I caught just a couple minutes of the Independent Spirit Awards and saw Ben Stiller present an award, very funny stuff. Not sure if its online anywhere but if you can find I would recommend for a good laugh.

One of them is that Inglourious Basterds is twice the movie that The Hurt Locker is pretending to be. Both The Hurt Locker and Inglorious Basterds are amazing films but you can't compare them. The Hurt Locker was a tense gripping war film, maybe the best war movie since Black Hawk down. Inglorious Basterds amazing though it was barely qualifies as a war film. I will say that Christopher Waltz and QT deserve to win there respective catagories as Waltz was amazing in his supporting role and QT wrote some fo the best characters I've seen in ages. In terms of Best Picture/Director the Hurt Locker is definitely the better choice though.

dzeroI know - I know. I even knew when I could have corrected it but couldn't be bothered. Especially when I knew it would get you posting. I know how you love to correct me. ;D The Serious Man was too stupid to mention in all seriousness. dzero - againBecause that's the only time I think of rating movies. I have a couple of friends in the biz and they go to the ceremony. Of course, they sit so far from the stage they depend of the TV screen. The only Oscar winner I really, really like is Out of Africa which I saw as a wee child and many times since on DVD. It's the only time they discuss movies seriously. They usually just diss the horrible actors, directors, etc., that are A-Holes. I liked the first Batman movie and the second one I like all the scenes that didn't have Aaron Eckhart or Health Ledger. Both the most overrated actors in the biz. I liked Christian Bale okay. I never feel any chemistry with him and his female stars, but that might be their fault. Christian Bale is like Harrison Ford and Nicholas Cage - an acting eunuch. Now see what Mr.Clark did - he has us completely
