dzeroSir Thomas More. Love that movie. I'm a fool for English history from 1603 back to the beginning. AngelZhahahahahaha It's funny about that movie. I went to see it because of Colin Firth and didn't think much of the movie. Later I read the book and fell in love with the story. I have the movie on DVD and have watched it several times and can't understand why I didn't like it the first time.

While I like and respect both Fargo and No Country, I kinda dispise them at the same time because they get lots of attention while IMO Millers Crossing is the best film the Coens have made yet.

Thanks! And just drove past the spot in his first pix just a few hours ago on the way to dinner! (Yum!) I hear that New Orleans is back to getting lots of movie companies in for filming -- and your beloved JA is supposed to be there soon (now, even?) to film a new movie... ;D If you feel like dropping by give me a shout -- I know all the best places (well, to eat, if not for finding JA...)

I'm kind of amazed by that article, I had no idea it was filmed in NO. I always thought it was shot in Chicago or LA because while they never really say it I still believe it was supposed to be set in Chicago. It always felt like a Chicago film to me especially with the whole Irish/Italian rivalry and the joke about Tom voting for the mayor six times sounded like the way they used do things is 20's and 30's Chicago.

I had the impression from the article that the movie hadn't specified where the story was set -- probably the filmmakers found enough locations they could use to look like 20's and 30's Chicago at a much lower production cost than going to Chicago, NYC, etc, where there might be similar old buildings -- NO isn't nearly as large and I suspect traffic and pedestrian flow would be a lot easier to manage for closing a street, etc. I've never seen figures, but just guessing (and probably a longer shooting season than northern & northeastern cities, especially if you can keep your people shooting through the sweltering June-August months!) So (and what did I know, I still haven't see it!) you're probably right about where they wanted you to think it was shot. The author seemed as amazed as you were -- maybe what sent him off on his mission to photograph so many locations from the movie? On the other hand: ever hear about N.O politics?

The movie doesn't really specify, at least not that I can recall (would love to rewatch it just to check but my DVD of it is back in the states), but like I said I always assumed it was supposed to be set in Chicago.

Yes they never say the name of the city and I think that is very much intentional. So the events in the film would not/could not be compared to whatever really happened during prohibition in that city. Not naming the city or location is also a common writers device to make their story seem more mythic. ( Personal opinion ) While Chicago is certainly the most famous example of Prohibition era rivalries between Irish/Italian gangsters, similar rivalries did play out in many other cities including I believe Providence. And while not specifically Irish vs Italian many other Midwestern/East Coast cities had very bloody gang wars during this time Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Detroit. I always got the feeling from the movie that it was meant to be in one of these slightly smaller cities rather than Chicago. Just got this from the everybody knows everybody else factor in the film.
