I have one for you -
Tom Clancy's Clear and Present Danger. I didn't like the book but loved the movie.
Excellent characters and great action scenes. Not my favorite movie from a Tom Clancy novel but I've rewatched it several times.
And another - the Mini-series Lonesome Dove was as good as the book. Not better - but damn good.

IMO the first three Clancy films were great, yea they deviated a little bit but they kept the essence of his characters. Accept for my namesake Willem Defoe was a terrible casting choice, great actor but not the right part for him. Ironically Sum of All Fears was got just abut everything wrong accept for Mr. Clark, Liev Schreiber was phenomenal as Clark.
Supposedly Sam Raimi has signed on to produce/direct 3 Jack Ryan films, its unclear whether they'll be based on books or just there own creation. Before the Raimi news leaked Ryan Gosling was set to play Ryan in a new film not sure if thats connected or not to what Raimi's doing.

See, this is why I say you have no soul. And which is why, of course, you have all these clips, photos and, yes, DVDs of that homely Jessica... I'm just sayin.'

IMO the first three Clancy films were great, yea they deviated a little bit but they kept the essence of his characters. Loved the early books, disappointed in all the movies -- maybe it's impossible to really get the feel in the movies, but they just didn't do it for me. They can't get Ryan cast true to the books. "Wrong" as in different from the book, yeah, but I admired the effort of taking Jack back to his early years. After all, the books sort of painted him in a corner -- once ya make a guy the president, what are you gonna do with him? So they went pre-quel and at least attempted to get some of the early years' excitement back. And honestly, I thought that for the way Clancy write the character of Jack Ryan in the first several books, Ben Affleck was more like the books' young Jack Ryan than either Harrison Ford or The Hotboy Baldwin were for their respective Jacks. I mean, I like Harrison Ford, but he's just not Jack Ryan. (on the other hand: no way is Ben Affleck Matt Murdock... :EDITED TO DENY Calling the Baldwin Brother "Hotboy" -- it's just that our Board censor won't let us use the name he shares with a certain S2 character (and isn't that silly...)

LOL I just found this out the other day. ;D Aerie claims to have nothing to do with any of this. FWIW Baldwin was the same age while shooting Hunt for Red October as Affleck was when shooting Sum of All Fears. Loved Red October btw, my favorite Connery film. And Patriot Games is underated IMO. By which I mean it's way better than Clear and Present Danger.

I mean, I like Harrison Ford, but he's just not Jack Ryan. The thing about SOAF that bugged me was that a reboot wasn't necessary. So far they've made the books in there chronological order so Ryan should have been older and one step closer to the white house than he was in C&PD. But no some hollywood exec said we need a younger sexier Jack Ryan, that Ben Affleck kid will put skirts in seats so lets go with him. I respect Tom Clancy immensely as a storyteller but as an ARTIST hes a complete sell out. Between his video game empire the millions of paperbacks he puts his name on (that were written by other people) and the complete cluster f*ck that was SOAF the man will take anyones money and put his name on anything. I like Ford's Ryan because he got the gist of what made Ryan, a straight shooter whose not afraid of anyone and refuses to play politics. I loved the fact that he was a 'boy scout' in a system of dirty scoundrels and he managed to succeed. I wish they had kept true to character and gotten him closer to the Oval office rather than farther. Affleck an ok job but he just didn't sell me on the character like Ford did. Jez Im getting all tingly again shy we better stop.

dzeroPatriot Games had really great bad guys and the action was good, but too much family stuff for me. I can't explain exactly why Clear and Present Danger is so good but I think it's the bad guys. They were all terrific. I liked all the characters really well. It's the only Jack Ryan movie I've re-watched several times. And I have to differ with Mr.Clark because I really liked Willem Defoe in CAPD. I thought Ben Affleck did a credible job as a young Jack Ryan in The Sum of All Fears. He looked the part and had a certain way of speaking or something that looked right. shyYeah, he was a lot like Tubby Maguire trying to be Peter Parker. The real Mary Jane Watson and Peter Parker

Hancock sucked. Get Smart was ok. Some clever bits but nothing spectacular. Not shaping up to be a good summer movie wise . Hopefully The Dark Knight will save the summer. Also looking forward to the new Xfiles movie and the new Will Ferrel movie looks funny.
