Is your craving fueled by things like your inability to get it, or your sudden proximity to getting the good stuff? As a typically loony example: when Mr. Shy & I moved to New Orleans' back door, we both underwent big daily changes in our intake -- he's never been much of a shrimp fan but now just miles away from where it's caught, where it's same day fresh and surrounded by cooks who know what to do with it, it's not only his favorite food but he's taught himself to make some slammin' shrimps. And I found that because many of the international foods I was used to having available in restaurants & groceries just weren't around down here in our part of the Deep South, I first developed massive cravings for foods I only halfway sought before, found ingredients on line and started to figure out how to make them myself. ...and we won't even go into my obsession with the perfect cup of coffee, given the watery stuff the locals seem to think qualifies... (and thanks for redirecting my need to obsess, dzero!)

bah, I knew I should have written a third "hint" Good to know it’s the cake and not the strawberries that are bothering you. ;D hmmm I like Strawberry flavored things ( ice cream, jam and the like ) but I don't really like actual Strawberries , the texture is weird. Ironically there is a Strawberry farm near me that is famous locally for their delicious Strawberries and so even though I don't eat them I have occasionally brought them as a present for others. Yes I live far enough out in LA county to have Strawberry farm placed in between the housing developments and golf courses. Your imagination is remarkably accurate as to how sponge cake tastes.

[/quote] I know what you mean. I have some relatives who are farmers up in the San Joaquin Valley think Steinbeck country and they get some incredibly fresh fruits and vegetables, I'll eat things up there that I can't stand buying at a store down here. Green peppers mixed in with a grilled swiss cheese on sourdough sandwich? never in million years here but up there? delicious. They can even get tasty Honeydew melons. Yes those green things with absolutely no taste that you always find mixed in with the watermelon and cantaloupe. Surprise surprise it actually does have flavor . coffee? Yuck coffee flavored Ice Cream on the other hand is what inspired my previous "foods you love" thread. Cold Stones "Coffee Lovers Only" specifically. mmmm good

How did I miss this threat!?! I know what you mean. Yes those green things with absolutely no taste that you always find mixed in with the watermelon and cantaloupe. Surprise surprise it actually does have flavor . Ohhhh, sounds like paradise. (I’m one of the weird people actually having vegetable and even more fruit cravings) And I know what you mean about melons. No sense in buying them here, but so good over in France (love their tradition of serving them as a starter and only found out in the US that watermelons actually have taste (other than iced cucumber). Your imagination is remarkably accurate as to how sponge cake tastes. That would confirm the prejudices about English cuisine then (that I didn’t get to try). So it seems strawberry shortcake is textual super GAU for you, but still, not liking strawberries? I eat about a pound a day. (Right now) ;D

or even foods you can't believe other people like. seafood for example, yuckSeafood yes, especially the half-alive versions. :-XAnd onions, horrible raw onions. If you are a foodie -- what food or drink do you crave or like to hunt for perfection? Is your craving fueled by things like your inability to get it, or your sudden proximity to getting the good stuff? Everything , but in particular anything that grows… I can’t go to the farmer’s market and just buy from the next best stall, instead checking all of them for the most perfect fruit, which is a stupidly time-taking habit. And craving, always just the kind of fruit or vegetable that’s out of season. (Big, fat Abate pears at the moment. Or cherries) ...and we won't even go into my obsession with the perfect cup of coffee, given the watery stuff the locals seem to think qualifies... Agreeing with dzero, but like this, roughly…? (Familiar?)

Time to add a little spice to food thread. ;D This video is my personal nightmare. It's not that I dislike spicy/hot foods it's just that I can't handle them. I end up with snot coming out my nose and sweating like I ran a marathon . If I did what is on this video I would probably have to go to the hospital. ...and we won't even go into my obsession with the perfect cup of coffee, given the watery stuff the locals seem to think qualifies... (and thanks for redirecting my need to obsess, dzero!)Did you get your coffee machine fixed? As I remember you were quite heartbroken about it... ;D As to eating the real deal, I've become quite addicted to both Chinese and Japanese cuisine (specially from Okinawa). I used to think that Japanese meant sushi (and quite bad sushi at that) and Chinese was usually a couple of rehashed staples thrown in 'all you can eat' restaurants...until I moved 1 block away from the local Chinatown. God, I didn't know anything about it! I've started to cook a little of both as well... Also my dad grows a little produce on his back yard, tomatoes, eggplant and many herbs, specially mint, basil and thyme...aah, fresh, home made pesto... ;D Oh, and avocados...huge things, weighing about half a kilo each...damn, now I can't stop drooling...

Video of a hot sauce challenge. g4tv.com/attackoftheshow/videos/38379/Kevin-and-Olivia-Take-Shots-Of-Hot-Sauce.html Ohhh, this looks like a contest for me. ;D I’m widely known for my weird love of spices (and salt) and not even noticing what other people find hot. (Normal ratio: one bowl of veggies - one table spoon of sambal oelek or horse radish ;D) Time to add a little spice to food thread. ;D It's not that I dislike spicy/hot foods it's just that I can't handle them. I end up with snot coming out my nose and sweating like I ran a marathon . According to my father this is why horseradish is good if you have a cold, sweats it out. As to eating the real deal, I've become quite addicted to both Chinese and Japanese cuisine (specially from Okinawa). I used to think that Japanese meant sushi (and quite bad sushi at that) and Chinese was usually a couple of rehashed staples thrown in 'all you can eat' restaurants...until I moved 1 block away from the local Chinatown. Oh, so envy you, I would love to try real Japanese, but the few restaurants here are out of my budget. I would even try these (And no, the gooey stuff isn’t cheese): Also my dad grows a little produce on his back yard, tomatoes, eggplant and many herbs, specially mint, basil and thyme...aah, fresh, home made pesto... ;D Oh, yes. Mint in salad....And fresh Rosemary. So, how about spices… What are your sweet or spicy favorites? This is my recent favorite, Tunisian Tabil , so good with veggies or on a sandwich.
