Have you seen "Moonlighting?" Tell us what you thought. There are discussions and spoilers also posted on our sister site NCIS Special Ops, if you're interested.

Enjoyable! ;D Happily lacking in a lot of the weirdnesses we've seen this year; more like what we used to see in the first couple years of the post-Kate, Ziva-added team. Good to see the team seeming to enjoy each other and dialing down the snark.

Good to see the team seeming to enjoy each other and dialing down the snark. It is hard to try to compare "NCIS" with Kate and "NCIS" with Ziva for me because I thought that Kate really wasn't allowed to do much including explore her background, she was a great character on paper but, we never really got to see her potential fufilled. I think that with the addition of Ziva that the NCIS team became much closer and that TPTB seemed to realize that it is a good idea to develop their female lead and let her have her own storylines from time to time. I think that when someone works as much as our favorite team does that everyone isn't bound to see eye to eye and get along all the time. It would be unrealistic to me if we didn't see some team members get on each other's nerves in my opinion.

Just to be clear, I wasn't intending to compare Kate & Ziva's roles or effect on the team, but was merely being lazy in identifying which seasons I meant, because I wasn't 100% certain which season Ziva joined -- I thought S3, but that seems odd that Kate was there only 2 seasons. Whichever it was, I simply meant that the episode was more like NCIS "classic," some character stuff (my favorite part of NCIS, admittedly), clever humor and lots of fun, but still keeping sight of a plot. The first couple years they were doing some of that, I know, but it was around S3 that they settled into the rhythm and characters that, personally, I liked for each character. Everyone's tastes are different, so there's no "right" time for when they gelled, but that was when it really started working more for me.

I think that it would be hard for me to go back and really watch Season 1 and 2 now because to me it's really like watching a completely different show. I don't think that Tony, Kate, and McGee worked well together and for me it got to the point where someone really had to go. I thought that in Season three that the team and that the show and the team grew into its own. I liked this episode and will enjoy what saw this week because it won't be something that is done consistently to say the least.

With both USA and ION showing NCIS reruns dozens of times each week, I have both on fairly frequently, and am far likely to actually stop and watch episodes from S3-S6 than from S1 or S2. Those first 2 years had a different team, different sense of humor, different show over all. Of course I watch for MW and to try to catch canon I may have ignored the first 20 times I saw an ep but I bet had they not had made the drastic change that they did by losing a team member before S3 that they would not have made it to S7 and the upcoming S8.

Let's not forget the "NCIS" reruns on the Sleuth Network, shywriter, LOL. ;D I don't think that "NCIS" would've made it to Season 8 with the original cast that "NCIS" began with either. I didn't know there was yet another network running NCIS! Comcast doesn't offer Sleuth network (yet?) so hadn't seen the ads or other info to know. ...with even another channel, it just adds to my thoughts that TPTB have to get serious about their contract negotiations with MW, PP, SM & DM -- those four are major contributors to a show that is not only still the #1 scripted show, but filling major cable network hours! I'm sure this sort of thing happens all the time, and no one on the boards seems particularly rattled about the contract talks not going much of anywhere for now, but I was sad to read that they're still being treated with less 'respect' than they should, salary-wise.

A big part of me wants to believe that the contract thing isn't a big deal that will eventually get sorted out in a perfectly acceptable resolution. Then I think of what happened with House at the end of Season 3, the actors playing Cameron, Chase and Foreman all had contracts about to expire at the end of the season so the writers wrote a finally where they all quit or got fired. They'll probably deny it but I still believe 100% it was a negotiating tactic so they could lowball the actors claiming it was no big deal if they didn't resign because they'd already basically been written out of the show. The result was of course all 3 actors returning but at the cost of an irreparably damaged narrative that has made the show much weaker in the longer run.

I only started watching regularly around the time they replaced Kate with Ziva and then caught up with the first couple seasons on USA. Honestly aside from those two characters I don't see a big difference. Some eps have more humor than others, some eps focus more on one character or another pretty much how it is now IMO. They do seem to do more multi episode stories as the series moves on and those multi ep stories tend to be more serious eps so I guess that's what everyone is talking about?

They do seem to do more multi episode stories as the series moves on and those multi ep stories tend to be more serious eps so I guess that's what everyone is talking about? While they did a fair amount of dropping hints into the characters' backgrounds in those first couple seasons -- Tony from a wealthy family, Gibbs with a string of bad relationships -- they were small, cast-off teasers that never really went anywhere until (under SB, post Don?) they started putting more emphasis on relationships and characters, almost allowing the crime of the week to get much less attention than the character development they were showing. Maybe that would have been a natural development, but I thought I read somewhere that it would not have been a direction Don would have taken the show. From going in that direction, we've had more of the multi-ep arcs, but also with something personal and hidden as a part of it -- Gibbs' lost family (and Hiatus, Franks, etc from that), The Tadpole (and DiNozzo's growth from goof frat boy to a more mature, albeit deceptive, adult), Ducky's mother and her loss, Ziva's father & her relationship with him, with Michael and a little of how her relationship with Ari came in... Maybe it wouldn't have been as different as it seems, but it's as if they made good on the 'promises' of something behind each character. Arguably, they may have gone too far and shown more than we need, but my guess it it's less that and more than they've gotten a bit lazy with how they're writing S7.

Yea I'm with shywriter, the difference I notice more than the Kate/Ziva change in the DPB/SB change. Brennan has said in interviews that he doesn't know as much about the military as DPB, who quite obviously was fascinated by it having spent almost two decades writing about it. Brennan always said having come from Australia (or was it NZ?) he had learned to focus more on characters than action because of budget issues and so forth.
