Seen two films this week. Nick and Norahs Infinite play list and How to Loose Friends and alienate people.
Nick n Norah was a pretty decent comedy and while I was a HUGE fan of Michael Cera in Superbad he kind of struggles to carry this pretty much on his own. theres some quality comedy but it feels like a movie made for the ADD generation by someone with ADD it doesn't feel as coherent as it should. Hard to describe really but I dont know how else to put it.
How to Loose friends wasn't really as good as I was hoping. The hole premise is that Simon Peggs character is such a belligerent ass that you want to see him screw up and fail but the problem is the more you see him the more endearing he becomes which means his failings aren't funny there just sad. They kind half assed it and because of that it doesn't really work like it should. Megan Fox is as always extremely hot however they've tried to sell this as the first movie of hers where she really acts but even then shes basically playing a tarty ditz which makes you wonder if shes really stretching those acting muscles as much you think. Kirsten Dunst is probably the most solid contributor here she hits most of her marks and steals most of her scenes, with some real charm.

You gotta go! (if for no other reason than to come report to those of us who live in parts of the country where they will *not* show it...) I'm serious. A few years ago they wouldn't even put a Michael Moore movie in a local Blockbuster til they had a stampede of people asking for it -- and in a college town, no less...

Platoon remains one of my all time favorite movies but after Alexander he is dead to me. On the other hand maybe I'm just a grouch, I was thinking of going to a movie this weekend, all excited to go to a brand new theater that opened up just a couple miles from me . Then I looked at the movies from which to choose? bleh not one of them could get me interested. I think I've only been to one movie in the last 3 months and that one I didn't like.

I'm going to get around to it at some point the problem is I've been in a down mood lately and from the reviews I've read W. is actually somewhat of a tragedy, so its not high on my list at the moment. There is however a (n my humble opinion) fantastic review for it up at AICN which can be read Here

Could it be that the impossible has happened? Have the reviewers on that site actually matured just a teeny tiny little bit? I was always more of a CHUD man myself. That is where I first used the screen name dzero. Of course I haven't read CHUD for years either. Anyways that has gotten me interested in seeing W, though I think I'll give Pride and Glory a try first. Even if the film sucks I know Norton will be worth watching.

I've been reading AICN for a couple years now and while some of the guys dont really appeal to me I've become a big fan of the reviews by Moriarty and Massawyrm, there both good and articulate writers, altho Massawyrm does get a bit profane at times. Other than those two I really only read it for the news articles that they post. I'm also kind of looking forward to Pride and Glory despite the pretty poor reviews I think Norton is the best actor of his generation I've yet to see Norton give a bad performance and despite his critics I'm a huge Farrell fan as well.

Saw Pride and Glory last night I actually liked it, its alot like We Own the Night but better. Norton and Farrell are really top notch and the fact that Joe Carnahan assisted in the writing is very very clear throughout. There are some scenes in this that feel a lot like Narc. Its not perfect but its quality.

I know I'm a bit late in the game, but I finally saw Spiderman 3 yesterday. OMG What were they thinking when they wrote the dancing scene? Stupid movie, but at least now I know what everyone is cringing about!

I saw Rock n Rolla Saturday night and I loved it so much I saw it again this afternoon. IMO its Guy Ritchie's best film thus far and I absolutely adore it. Mark Strong, Toby Kebbell and Gerrard Butler are terrific as is the always classy Tom Wilkinson. Ritchie has clearly improved as a writer and director over the last couple of years and the characters in this are far superior to those in Lock Stock and Snatch which are both great films. For starters Gerrard Butler is a far more interesting lead (if you can call anybody a lead in Ritchie's ensemble pieces) than Jason Statham, hes just a better actor flat out. The films major sequence is a chase scene featuring Bulter's 'Wild Bunch' on the run from a couple of invincible Russian thugs, its a fantastic scene thrilling and hilariously funny at the same time. That scene alone has me even more excited for Ritchie's take on my beloved Sherlock Holmes character. Toby Kebbell is also a fantastic find hes the smartest and funniest junky you'll ever meet. Its apparently the set up for a sequel or trilogy and if so I can't wait to see these characters go at it.
If I have one complaint about this film is that its overflowing with talent theres several great actors with solid characters who go very under utilized namely Jeremy Piven and the God that is Idris Elba who will forever be Stringer Bell to me (dzero you really need to see the Wire).
Apparently Warner Brothers is screwing the pooch on this and doing a pretty limited release which, much like they pulled with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, is a huge shame because this is by far Ritchie's best work and if your a fan of Snatch and Lock Stock you really need to put in the effort and find this one near you its great fun.

You should also post the link over at Special Ops. The Tony thread needs a bit of a rev up.
