In this article, Berman says DA skewed male. I know way more female fans than male fans, so I'm wondering which group watched DA more. Anybody got numbers they could give me?

No numbers, but I do remember interviews in which Jessica Alba said she was often approached by mothers and daughters who watched the show together. Thanks for posting this. Very interesting indeed.

What SisterMoon said.
I wonder where Berman got her figures - from the same Magic 8 ball that said HorseFly was going to be The Standard By Which All Space Operas Would Now Be Measured?

Not guilty to Berman's allegation.
Logan was great and loved. Alex was loved even though he was a bit ..... Lydecker was loved (& hated, too) and wanted back. Bling was loved. Normal became likeable and was always an interesting character. Sketchy was .... well, he "grew" on us and was being developed more even though he was a "foil" for a good bit of the action. The "baddies" were good characters - most of 'em anyway, esp. Bruno Anselmo. Dr. Carr was loved. "Herbal" was loved and missed when he didn't return. Zack was loved. Tinga's husband was loved - at least by me. I started watching First Wave because of Sebastian Spence. Robert LaSalle was a great actor even though his characters were creeps. He played the guy that bragged about mixing the DNA for the virus and then skipped out on Max before he cured it.
Seems to me the one male character that wasn't "loved" was Ames White. Ugh! One jerk does not mean that all the male characters were "skewed". How limited a vision ..... Sounds to me like sour grapes from Berman - in search of justification for an imprudent decision.

I don't think Fox had any kind of clue at all as to what demographics they hit in the first season. They went in with a pre-conception of who it would appeal to and totally missed out that there was a wide age range of fans and that it appealed to women just as much as (if not more than) it did to adolescent males. DA S1 had the kind of demographic fanbase that XF did - if Fox had figured that out and stuck with the tone and story of S1 ( as well as the night) DA would probably still be around. Jessica said as much in an interview she did in August 2001 pre season 2 - gave me a lot of respect for her. She knew who the fans were and what they wanted. It's a shame Fox didn't ask her (or listen to her!)

Of the people I know in RL who loved S1 DA, there were: a woman in her early 20's a gay man in his late 20's a married man in his early 30's a 9-year-old girl and of course old-lady me Nice feel for the demographics over there at Fox, huh?

That lady has problems. She mentioned the fans of DA and which sex and age group liked it more, but there aren't even going to be demographics for Firefly, it won't have any fans. Ok, that may not be true, but she'll be able to count the fans on her fingers.

I liked Martin Cummins as an actor and as the character he portrayed in Poltergeist: The Legacy - though I was not a regular watcher. I disliked the character Ames White - he was always angry, over what? - we were never told. I though Cummins' acting never gave "life" to the character - but I suspect that may well have been the way the character was written and/or directed. Ames White could have developed, but he didn't. Maybe Martin Cummins didn't like Ames White either!

I disliked the character Ames White - he was always angry, over what? - we were never told. When we found out in Love Among The Runes that both Ames and C.J. had heard Sandeman talk about Max many years ago, I immediately assumed that he was bitter. Maybe he felt that Max was more important to his father than he was. I know a lot of people think that he wouldn't care, but considering the fact that he's so close to his son I have to assume that a father/son relationship is very important to him. (Besides, I think the fact that he was angry all the time just made him more dangerous to Max. People are much less likely to show mercy or compassion when they're royally pissed off.) Also, I think Martin Cummins did a great job playing White, it looked like he enjoyed playing a bigwig. He certainly fit the part well.

I am going to relate the following information that I have heard or collected over the past few years, which basically proves that Berman is totally out to lunch as to the subject of M/F demographics for the series Dark Angel. The information that I am speaking of is a composite of a number of stories that have been related to me from a number of sources who have children in their early teen years and a couple of teachers who teach Junior High School. Because I reside in the Great White North better known as Canada, during the winter months when the weather is usually the pits most Canadians who don’t play hockey or ski and are basically couch potatoes during the winter months, they usually look for television programs like Flipper which had beautiful scenery and basically depicted summer, that is where I became aware of Jessica Alba and also attracted the attention of the daughter, son and niece of a business acquaintance. These kids fell in love with Maya the character played by Jessica and the fact that she could swim with the dolphins and they decided that they too wanted to be just like the character of Maya and become trained scuba divers and they too could swim with the dolphins. The next step was a newspaper article that appeared in the local newspaper in June of 1999 about James Cameron selecting Jessica Alba to be the lead character in his new series the Dark Angel, so that series became number one on their schedule. Then they read that Jessica had started a vigorous training program to prepare for the series, taking such things as Marital Arts, gymnastics and aerobic training. Well you can guess what happened when the series premiered on Tuesday October 3, 2000, all three kids were on the floor in front of the television with their eyes glued to the screen, this scene repeated each week for the balance of the 1st season of the series. But in December of 2000 they started to beg their parents to let them take gymnastics and aerobics at school, which they did. They also refused to answer to their real given names and they now wanted to be known as Max, Max l and Logan both at school and at home, the next step happened in March of 2001 when they made a deal with their parents that if they got good marks in their studies that all three would be allowed to take classes in the Marital Arts over the summer. So now by the start of the 2nd season of the Dark Angel all three kids were now prepared to be the next Max and Logan in case Jessica and Michael decided to leave the series. These kids did not miss one episode of the 1st season or the 2nd season. The routine was the same every week , prior to the show coming on they would do their homework when that was finished they would then practice their Martial Arts until the show came on at 9:00PM. They also taped the episode and repeated same entire routine each night until the following Tuesday night, and then they started the whole routine again. These kids were totally engrossed with the series and the character of Max and the fact that she was made in a laboratory, but when they heard the announcement of the cancellation of the series they were devastated and they haven’t recovered since, and they too despise the Fox Network and Berman. I can not tell you the number of time I have heard a similar story from various sources and in just about every case it involved 14 or 15 years old girls which just proves that Berman doesn’t have a clue when it comes to the demographics of the Dark Angel.
