Ok so I am sitting in my science class reading the magazine given out to us by the sub. And I stuble across an article about genetically engineered mice. And how scientists use these experiment to improve the human race. Here are some cut outs. I wish I could show you guys the pictures. It shows the dramatic improvment of muscle mass in the mouse, after its genes have been altered. a.) Myostatin is a gene found in mice and humans. To find out its effects on muscle, scientists deleted the gene from DNA found in a 8 week old (ebryonic) mice cells. DNA is a helix of chemicals that stores genes. b.)Cells lacking myostatin were then injected into cells of a normal mouse embryo. c.)The cells lacking myostatin mixed with the normal cells of the ebryo. d.)Next, the embryo was allowed to grow in a pregnant mother, e.)Result: The genetically engineered offspring had up to four times more muscle mass then a average mice. __________________________ Basically its all about how scientists are working on creating the perfect human, and how athelets would gain strenght and speed, aswell as regular humans. Also how disease might be cured. ___________________________ This isn't the first time something that has to do with the plot line of DA that has come up in real life. I was listening to the news when they were talking about how terrorists are working on a ElectroMagnetic pulse to take down America. I dunno maybe I am the only one thats intrested in this kind of stuff..

I think a lot of the original premise of DA has its roots in what is really going on.
In addition to the genetics research you mentioned and the fact that the US is very concerned about an EMP that could disable key infrastructure, the US Army is also working on creating an exoskelton that would be used by soldiers to increase their strength and speed. Research is going on with nanocytes such as those used to infect Case with his fever. Tasers are a reality now.
That basis in the reality of what science could do with genetic engineering and technology was one of the things that really hooked me on DA in Season1. I could see so much of what they talked about actually happening. It wasn't just fantasy stuff like vampires and demons.

I wonder if a manticore is possible, with our corrupt government, then probably:P

I guess but I always thought of DA as fiction not fact. Wow I guess Star is right. I was reading some posts on the other board about a book called ''When the wind blows'' and its a lot like Dark Angel. In the author notes the guy James is talking about how close to reality the book is on Genetic testing and all the other fun DA stuff (BTW Sorry I havent gotten on to the boards in a while. I lost my DSL connection. Won't be on untill 12-19-03)

I think I always loved D.A because of the fact that it could be real and because of how advanced the idea is. The fact that J.C's fictional show is gaining leverage in the fact world is just cool! ;D

Hell, It would be great to be genetically engineered but face it everyone; we would have to wait another century to have those possebilities. (damn, my grammar really sucks )

We don't care about grammar and spelling here.
Many governments and private industry have been genetically engineering fruit and vegetables for many years, and animals for a few years.
Humans. Yes, they are doing that too.
They might not be far enough along yet and they might not have barcodes, but watch out for those kids at pre-school. ;D

Dark Angel is very trendy hard sci fi. It deals with the coming threat of the mega-terror event well in advance of the 9/11 attacks. It address head on the issues of genetic engineering and cloning which are current political and research issues. It's a very important show.

Also another intresting fact I found out:
I don't know how many of you read the 3rd DA book, but its all about the cult, and how their waiting for the coming, and they want to kill Max because she is the only one that can save man kind. Well the coming is a commet, that suppose to hit earth on Christmas day of 2022 or 2021 (sorry not sure). And according to scientists there is a commet heading for earth that is estimated to hit earth in 20 yrs. Either its going to hit, or is EXTREMLY close to the earth. Right now scientists are working on a solution for this ''problem'', but thankfully the media isint very intrested (apperantly Bennifer is more intresting...). This will prevent any furture panic....

Science Fiction has forever developed into science fact ever since the first sci-fi book was written. While science fiction and fantasy are often grouped together (both hare extremely imaginative forms of writing), the distinguishing difference is that we can actually beleive in science fiction because it tells us of a potential future or present.
Science fiction inspisres scientists to push the boundarys and explore the possibilities. That is why we often see Science fiction being pursued by scientists.
Or it could just be a big coincidence!!!!

Was gonna mention that the Koreans had successfully cloned human embryos, just read it in the paper today. ML Fan beat me to it, plus I didn't have detailed info.

It doesn't fit the stem cell theme, but it's DA related (or maybe I've just got DA on my mind?): US puts on pair of robotrousers By Lester Haines (The Register) Posted: 12/03/2004 at 15:07 GMT Some people never learn. Anyone who has ever seen the chilling and prophetic Aardman animation The Wrong Trousers will be fully aware of the perils awaiting he who attempts to produce the world's ultimate pair of strides. Be afraid, then, at the announcement that Berkeley Robotics Laboratory has been for some time developing BLEEX - aka the Berkeley Lower Extremities Exoskeleton - a Terminator-style pair of cybertrousers for tomorrow's Starship Trooper. BLEEX will enable the future warrior to travel vast distances and effortlessly carry huge loads - all thanks to 40 sensors and motors which combine to provide the ultimate walking experience. Naturally, BLEEX is a little more than a couple of strap-on pogo sticks. The whole device has been cunningly put together to become as one with the user. There are no buttons, joysticks or other paraphernalia which would otherwise impede the relentless march towards the future. BLEEX is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which is itself funded by the Pentagon. The development team does, however, insist that these electronic exogams are not intended to equip an army of super-nimble cyborg killers. Far from it, they expect the potent pins to find a role in worthy and civic-minded activities like firefighting. All of which will come as a great relief to the Axis of Evil™, since they are not now faced with the terrifying prospect of synchronised tap-dancing Marines advancing inexorably across the deserts of Iran or Syria. Instead, we have the appealing prospect of technologically-enhanced firemen extracting distressed cats from trees with a single bound. Good show. ® (More info - and pictures: www.me.berkeley.edu/hel/bleex.htmOriginal article: www.theregister.co.uk/content/73/36222.html)

Why not? Science is gone really crazy in the last few years and is growing really fast, in a few years(or eventually) they'll be able to do that to a human....
