(for Mari! ;D) Ah yes, because I’m such a terribly voracious person. ;D The resemblance really is striking. Looks like sooo much fun… and I just realized when watching the webcam pics that you don’t even need to wear five layers of winter clothes or have warm drinks while watching.

Has this thread really been quiet for a year? well, then... Laissez le bon temps rollez!Only a couple weeks away from Mardi Gras, and we're making our plans for which parades we'll go see this year ... disappointing celebrity list but hey, that's not why we go! ;D To get you all in the mood to come join us this year: the parades have already started! In the French Quarter, the "Krewe du Vieux's Stimulus Package" featured bedraggled bankers... ...and the Krewe of Bilge Carnival did its annual watery parade through the canals of Eden Isles. ... if Hurricane Katrina couldn't stop New Orleans, neither will a dagging economy! Read on... Carnival Commentary Posted: February 07, 2009 on www.mardigrasguide.com/

MARDI GRAS IGNORES RECESSION
Mardi Gras thrives in the best of times and in the worse of times, when the city and the nation need a little extra cheer. Despite the loss of three small parades that never recovered from Katrina—Shangri-La, Gladiators and Aquila (all of which promise to try to come back in 2010)—don’t expect to see any other signs of a weakening economy at this year’s Carnival celebration in New Orleans. Mardi Gras is alive and well. History shows that parades come and go. In the 1980s, some 18 krewes folded and were replaced by 27 new ones. Such is the ebb and flow of the parade calendar. In 2009 Orleans Parish presents the maximum number of parades that city ordinances allow—33.
The City can still play the national recession to its advantage. Why not announce through the Convention & Visitors Bureau that in these tough times, New Orleans still offers America’s greatest tourist bargain. It’s called MARDI GRAS and it is FREE! Not only is there no admission charge, but we also provide millions of dollars in gifts for our visitors to take home. Talk about entertainment value! Let’s see Orlando beat that offer.C'mon down and join the fun!

that looks like way too much fun shy. how can i get a week off to do that? Just load up that beer truck and tell the boss you're making a delivery! ( a truck full of beer might not last too long during Carnival, but while it lasted it would make you lots of friends! (by the way, all photos courtesy of the Times-Picauyne except this one: ...which I took last year on Fat Tuesday at the Zulu Parade! ;D

Like making an alive, fun place even more so, something that fits the general atmosphere? (Unlike here where I just volunteered to work during the carnival days )

Sooooooooo much fun. I used to go every other year with a bunch of my peeps. Our last time was the year before Katrina. I'm off to look for my beads to wear during the festival. I'm sure a club here will be acting all crazy on those days. Hmmm - gotta find the right outfit to wear. ;D

Your carnival pictures always look like so much fun. Like making an alive, fun place even more so, something that fits the general atmosphere? (Unlike here where I just volunteered to work during the carnival days ) It's just hard to find photos from Mardi Gras that don't show people just having a great time. ;D Everyone should come visit, at least once! I'm no expert (only 2 official Mardi Gras visits to claim) but we've seen only good-natured fun, even when people are drinking to excess. I'm sure there are tons of horror stories out there but we've been lucky and, as long as you're smart enough not to wear sandals (or ack! go barefoot!) -- because, after all, there just aren't that many public toilets available and there are LOTS of guys drinking LOTS of beer along those parade routes ( ) -- then you should be fine! (That overload of unnecessary info was brought to you courtesy of the "Full Disclosure in Tourism" Counsel... ;D

I'm no expert (only 2 official Mardi Gras visits to claim) but we've seen only good-natured fun, even when people are drinking to excess. Interesting… No drunks having fun with scaring little kids into crying of fear (okay, yes, I’m partial, I’ve been traumatized ) and excesses of drunk male hand wandering? Hm, wonder why the difference? (Carnival was the only time my not overly careful mother wouldn’t let me walk home after dark without (preferably male) adult company.) I'm sure there are tons of horror stories out there but we've been lucky and, as long as you're smart enough not to wear sandals (or ack! go barefoot!) -- because, after all, there just aren't that many public toilets available and there are LOTS of guys drinking LOTS of beer along those parade routes ( ) -- then you should be fine! Almost makes me glad carnival is in freezing, boot-wearing winter here… only almost though, because watching parades in warm weather, without freezing solid… Sounds so good. And yours looks so much more colorful. (That overload of unnecessary info was brought to you courtesy of the "Full Disclosure in Tourism" Counsel... ;D Ach, that’s the kind of tourism info you prefer? Will try to remember. ;D
