I feel depressed reading this thread Nice job Aerie I did some crunches and weights this morning. Please keep talking about how healthy you all are so that I can be guilted into revisiting the gym!

MrAngelZ has signed up to do a 1/4 marathon (I didn't even know they came in different sizes). My guilt level is only up to about 50%, so I still haven't revisited the gym

I've discovered the ultimate health and fitness regime during my enforced hiatus: Go On A Geology Field Trip.
The enforced route marches and nine hour days of fellwalking up 45 - 60 degree inclines will have you shedding weight like bricks falling off the back of a truck. Hurdling over drystone walls topped with barbed wire is great for the muscle tone too; within a month, you too can have calves like the Incredible Hulk. And that's not all; keeping warm takes more calories than anything else, so make sure you go during the wettest June since records began. You will also enjoy taking healthy dips in the purest of spring water when you fall over while wading through an icy cold river that's burst its banks. Refreshing mud treatments are also freely available in the form of the great number of bogs and marshes you will have to cross to get to an interesting rock on the other side (just make sure you take a friend to pull you out). All this on cheese sandwiches and instant noodles (because the local shop doesn't sell anything else) will drop you a jeans size in no time so none of your clothes actually fit you when you get back. Oh, and did I mention the rain? We had three days when it didn't rain. In a full month. When it took two hours just to walk back from the field area. And in order to do so you actually have to climb above the cloud base so you can't see more than a few feet in front of you when you're making your way along a sheep track with bracken all around you as high as your shoulders. Even your feet will get a full exfoliation; trust me, putting your hiking boots back on every morning when they're still soaked through from the previous day will peel all the skin off them in no time.
Yes, geology is the ultimate fitness regime; why not try it for yourself?
(Can you tell I've been composing this in my head for the past four weeks on my way back to the hostel every day?)
Ok. I'm done whingeing now. Phew; and it feels so good.

Wonderful plan, Sim, and so delightfully described! I'll bet if you made a DVD promoting your plan you could become wealthy! (at least here in the US; people spend money out the wazoo for the latest weight reduction plan-- just get on Oprah and you have it made!) Oh, and did I mention the rain? We had three days when it didn't rain. In a full month. *LOL!* The exact description of September I spent in the British Isles a handful of years ago!

Ha, yeah, I thought of asking about lack of sleep and malnutrition on field trips… ;D (One advantage of having living examination objects is that they usually feed you ;D) Poor you. Are youth hostel standards in England everywhere as low (in relation to prize) as in London (one thin blanket, but no heating and windows that wouldn’t close in Dezember) then? Oh, and did I mention the rain? We had three days when it didn't rain. In a full month. *LOL!* The exact description of September I spent in the British Isles a handful of years ago! Actually that’s a very accurate description of the weather here for most of June and all of July so far. Rain, rain, rain and about 12 °C / 53 °F. But of course I don’t have to be out in it for most of the time.

It's about time AZ. Were you in pain afterwards? When I'm in town I go to the gym five days a week. Then I stop at a health food cafe and have a wheat germ shake and a sprout sandwich Starbucks and have a latte and a fruit tart. (Fruit is healthy.) ** If it's later in the day I have a frappuccino. ** In my defense I ate fresh fish and shellfish 3 times a day, everyday, on my vacation. And fresh fruit and veggies. Some of that fresh fruit appeared in the drinks.

Rum and fruit go together ;D *** Speaking of exercise - I felt like my body had gotten totally out of shape, so I decided to join a fitness club, and take an aerobic class.
I bent twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down and perspired for an hour but by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

Re: Sim's Geology Trip exercise plan Several years ago I went to a dance camp in Weymouth, Dorset, England for a week. I danced daily, but not as much as I would have liked and they fed us 2 meals a day at the camp and we had fabulous dinners out in the evening. Plus we did a lot of siteseeing, some tour bus, and some on foot. Keyword: Foot. My friend Carol dragged me over every hilltop in the area [picture the hills in the Sound of Music] and everytime I wanted to call a cab, she talked me out of it. ["by the time they get here we'll be home"]
The big however was when I got home I had lost 8 pounds! I told her later that was the first vacation I had ever been on that I hadn't gained weight. Made it hard to stay mad at her.
Now I do an exercise plan called T-tapp. [ www.t-tapp.com ] Once you learn the beginning part it only takes 15 minutes to do which makes it convenient, and you don't need any equipment other than good sneakers and an optional hand towel. It really burns the fat, rehabilitates the back and knees, and for women it helps with hormonal imbalances. One of the moves is esp. made for burning sugar and was tested as lowering blood sugar [esp. good for diabetics and those with syndrome X]. I lost 3 sizes in 2 months [they tell me that was very unusual] without dieting. [I'm on the Testimonial Tuesday page 9-12-2006].
Foodwise, I just aim for better choices, skip the preservatives and hydrogenated fats and high fructose corn syrup, More homecooked food and less fast/convenience foods, and drastically limit the 'white' stuff: sugar, flour, homogenized milk, rice and pasta, and almost no soda [every now and then I want a root beer or a Pepsi]. I mainly figure if I'm going to have 12 or more teaspoons of sugar [like an average soda; not counting pumped up stuff like Jolt], I'd rather have it in a pie or cheesecake
I just joined a cool nutrition site that has lots of good articles and a free newsletter. viralurl.com/DMB/HealthyFood What I like is that the owner of the site doesn't really promote any particular plan or make you feel bad about your choices. She just wants you to have information so that you can make a good choice for you.
PS to Aerie- I used to do the getting-into-my-leotard workout too ;D
PS to Dzero- I don't know if Jessica is working out now as hard as she used to when she was on DA, but if she is she would need more calories.
