I'm the last person who should be starting the new movie thread, but #2 was ready to implode.
Thanks to On Demand we finally got around to watching District 9 --
Wow.
I can't remember when I've been so hooked and drawn in by a movie -- has to be the best film I've seen in years (yes, I don't see lots, but still) -- this is so far beyond the usual drek... (I know there are some weaknesses and sentimentality that some of you harder core may have found unnecessary, but I'm still too awed to entertain any of that yet.)
The only post I found here discussing it was last May, when dzero announced it as upcoming. Our usual movie crew not into it?
Two tentacles up, man.

I haven't seen it yet, I just don't get out to the movies like I used to , I haven't even seen JA's latest yet The trailer for District 9 just never looked good to me but the unanimous rave reviews from seemingly everyone who has seen it has me intrigued and I'm looking forward to watching this.

I'm thinking that I saw a very, very short early trailer -- just a shot of some of the District 9 "buildings" and a quick voice-over -- no no idea how the real trailer would match up. The first few minutes, seeing how they did the aliens, I wasn't sure about how they were done, seemed initially like it could be a cheesy, campy reproduction of them -- but I was so pulled in from the very first minute I didn't have time to worry about it. They get past that, too. That was what first knocked the breath out of me; it starts you in the middle of everything and once you're hooked, it's hard to pull away. Don't wanna spoil the shifting of the movie's focus as it's kinds spoily, not so much for plot as for its overall feel and presentation. Really, really effective look to it, too -- though it's pretty grisly in much of it -- and maybe what added to how compelling it was for me was the soundtrack. Love it when a movie comes along that isn't just the standard fare. Rent it, dial it up, whatever -- amazing movie! (and let me just say it must be a cold day in hell -- I've actually seen a movie from this decade that dzero hasn't seen yet! ;D)

I pointed out on here recently that the guy that directed District 9 was Visual Effects supervisor or some such, for the Dark Angel pilot. The guys a genius and when you consider that the budget for that film was like 1/10 of what Transformers was and probably 1/20th of what Avatars was its pretty impressive.

Oh, sorry -- remember your mentioning the guy but hadn't remembered it was that movie he'd done. After seeing it I did a brief info check and, unless my glance was too quick, he won lots of "first time movie-maker" type awards for District 9 and was nominated for even more. (at least someone did, and I assume it was the director rather than producer -- but maybe that's a bad assumption... )

I haven't even seen JA's latest yet ... you may want to save your pennies.. (just stumbled across this on a random link) SPOILER SPOILER SPOILERFrom an on-line review titled Valentine's Day'? I'd Rather Knife Myself Through the Heart -- "It's always a risk when you have an ensemble piece with multiple plot lines. Robert Altman executed it beautifully in 'Short Cuts.' Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Magnolia,' ditto. But, wow. This film took on more than it could handle. There is the Ashton Kutcher storyline -- he's a florist who proposes to his lifeless, boring girlfriend Jessica Alba on Valentine's morning. By Valentine's afternoon, he has a returned engagement ring and a broken relationship.... "The only redeeming thing about this film, besides that it had an ending (though, I can't actually be sure the film does have an ending, because I walked out after an hour and a half of torture), was Ashton Kutcher's performance. He actually had depth and a lot of heart. I wouldn't even blame the rest of the cast's acting chops for their sub-par performances. They had nothing with which to work. They'd have had as good a shot at conveying emotion if they were reading aloud the little comic strips that come with Bazooka bubblegum." insidemovies.moviefone.com/2010/02/16/valentines-day-review/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+InsideMovies+(Moviefone%3A+Inside-Movies)

See its stuff like this that makes me really wish JMA would stop trying to make a name for herself in the comedy or romantic/fluff/comedy genres. Supposedly her performance in The Killer Inside Me is one of the best of her career which really should be a sign that maybe shes trying to market herself as something shes not. Hell at this point I think she should consider going back to TV.

What a cool plot! (Seems hard to pull of in a non third class horror movie kind of way though) And nice to imagine some of the scenery and mood of decaying S1 Seattle in it. (I've always liked the setting of that first scene of Max riding through Seattle) And here I let go the offer for a free movie from the online on demand provider. (Ha, just checked, they didn't have it anyway. And 3 € to re-watch a TV show episode after it finally aired here? Monopolistic and bad selection )

I saw Valentine's Day on the weekend and I liked it. It was fun, a good date movie (I was on one) and Jessica Alba was good in it.
I didn't like Ann 'Bugeyes' Hathaway and the squinty eyed couple, Taylor & Taylor, are weird looking, but everybody else was fine.
Movies like this are relaxing and you don't feel like going home and sticking your head in the oven afterwards.
District 9 was an awesome movie. I saw it twice in the theater, and I noticed a lot of things the second time around.
I've never understood why anyone on the planet would pay attention to the critics. Most of them are big losers that have failed at movie making/script writing/etc., and hate to see people having a good time watching a movie.
Why in the fricking world would you let a pompous windbag choose your movies. Watch and enjoy.

I managed to catch up on a couple of films over the Easter holidays. Terminator Salvation I am too depressed about this incarnation of the franchise to even discuss it. Oh oh oh what it could have been! Avatar 3D Good solid movie and I actually enjoyed it - despite reading so many ho-hum reviews. I guess the secret was that I went in with quite low expectations. Empire of the Sun Hadn't seen this movie since...since I can't remember. Fantastic film. I couldn't stop thinking about it for at least a week afterwards.

The only movie anybody needs to see right now, as in ASAHP is Kick Ass. It might be the best comic book movie ever. I think dzero mentioned he'd seen Layer Cake, not sure about anyone else. I've been a fan of Mathew Vaughn (director of Kick Ass) since he made Layer Cake and I've been convinced since then that this guy is headed for the A-list, he's going to be up there with the Scott brothers, Spielberg's etc very very soon. This film further reinforces my opinion on that, its absolutely epic.

In a rare positive twist to typical unfavorably fluxed up release schedule that often sees the UK get cinematic releases well after the US, Iron Man 2 came out here last weekend. I got a chance to see it the other day and I have to say it is quite a bit of fun. Long story short if you liked the first Iron Man your sure to like this one. RDJ is still at the top of his game, Don Cheadle is definitely an improvement over Terrence Howard. The villians are also something of a step up as the incredibly underrated Sam Rockwell and Mickey Rourke absolutely chew up scene after scene. For those familiar with the comic world S.H.I.E.L.D plays a much bigger role in this film than in the last film. Mad Men fans here will probably enjoy, at least as much as I did, the great cameo-ish appearance of John Slattery as Howard Stark Tony's father, there is a great plot thread involving Slattery that is probably my favorite part of the film. Scarlett Johanson proves yet again that she is sex on legs, I'm now fully convinced that by the time she hits 40 she'll be considered one of the greatest looking actresses in history she really is a throwback to the Liz Taylor/Lauren Bacall's.
Also for anyone thats curious there is an easter egg scene at the very end of the film, after the credits. I won't spoil what it is but I will say its not quite as cool, at least not in my opinion as the one from the first film.

I saw The A-Team movie the other day, it was good. I saw it yesterday and its not bad but it has some pretty glaring flaws. Sharlto Copley is fantastic though, Bradley Cooper is pretty good and Rampage isn't bad either.
