Tim Story Gives Fantastic Four 2 Update Source: Tim Story January 12, 2007 Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer director Tim Story has posted an update on what is happening at this time on his official Blog: Here I am guys. Been going strong editing for a couple weeks now (not including the countless weeks doing it while I was shooting). Everything's everything. Wish there was more to share but we're just into so much. Titles, Vis effects, sound - all that. Got a lot to experiment with in regard to sound - The Surfer, the Fantasticar, and... Okay, so if it could be anyone - who would be the voice of the Surfer? And don't be obvious. The person/voice can't be too recognizable or it will take you out of the movie." You can give your opinion by posting a comment in the post at the link above! Possible Spoiler Space2007 PREVIEW: 'FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER' Screenwriter Don Payne talks about what’s to come in the further adventures of Marvel’s First Family and why he wants to script a Silver Surfer spin-off. Galactus is going to be in the movie. There it is. That’s the answer many fans have been wondering ever since 20th Century Fox announced the sequel to 2005’s “Fantastic Four” is going to be called “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” instead of “FF2.” After all, you can’t have the Silver Surfer without Galactus, right? Now the question on everyone’s minds is of course, what the hungry, world-devouring master will look like when he arrives on screen on June 15, 2007. Screenwriter Don Payne is coy, but he’s quick to point out “the story definitely focuses more on the Silver Surfer—otherwise it would be called ‘Rise of the Silver Surfer and Galactus,’” he laughs. However, further prodding reveals the purple planet eater, who sends his herald to seek out worlds suitable for him to consume, may not actually be explored as a character, but more as a “force.” “As far as Galactus goes, the essence will be the same,” Payne maintains, describing the entity as an amalgam of concepts combined with the original “Coming of Galactus” story from Fantastic Four #48. “We’re also using elements from Fantastic Four #57-60, where the Silver Surfer encounters Dr. Doom,” Payne says. “Then there are a couple moments that were inspired by Ultimate Extinction.” Payne, who’s written and produced “Simpsons” episodes and is coming off penning “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” starring Uma Thurman, has the chops to give FF2 plenty of the foursome’s trademark wit and drama. But better yet, he’s not only a lifelong Silver Surfer fan, he’s a true-blue fanboy. And as such, the writer promises a film true to its Stan Lee/Jack Kirby roots, complete with strong characters, laugh-out-loud situational comedy and, of course, plenty of bizarre and mysterious sci-fi brought to life. “I think the sci-fi aspects set [the Fantastic Four] apart from other superhero comics,” says Payne. “It will definitely have comedic moments, but it will also have drama and action and amazing visual effects. It’s a fun adventure movie first and foremost.” Despite his passion for the FF, Payne had his eyes sternly locked on his favorite character of all, who will make his big-screen debut. “I’ve always loved the Surfer,” the writer gushes. “I think he may be the most complex comic character of all time. He’s mysterious and he’s powerful and he’s menacing and he’s aloof but he’s also thoughtful and noble and tragic. He’s made this huge sacrifice and yet he’s bringing about the destruction of countless worlds and civilizations. He feels guilty about it but he has to have this Zen-like detachment.” “Rise of the Silver Surfer” takes place about a year after director Tim Story’s 2005 film, and Payne has the rundown of what Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Ioan Gruffudd), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Jessica Alba), Ben Grimm/the Thing (Michael Chiklis) and Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Chris Evans) have been up to between films. “They’re way better off financially, and you’ll see that reflected in the Baxter Building and in Reed’s lab, both of which have been refurbished,” Payne explains, adding that, in his mind, the team will have had encounters with a few supervillains in that time period. “Reed and Sue are dealing with being celebrities and superheroes and also trying to have a private life. Reed is struggling to retain his status as a respected scientist while also doing the superhero thing.” Ben Grimm in particular has come a long way from his closeted self-conscious stage seen in the first film. “Ben is more comfortable about being the Thing,” Payne assures, “thanks mostly to his relationship with Alicia [Masters (Kerry Washington)].” The fourth team member is still lighting the world on fire with his signature bravado. “Johnny is still Johnny,” Payne says, referring to the character’s devil-may-care attitude, “although he’ll have a little bit of introspection about his life and his own unique problems to deal with in this movie.” As for confirming one of the film’s least-kept secrets, Payne jokes that the wedding between Reed and Sue may be “the most photographed wedding since Prince Charles and Princess Di.” Also, look for a certain metallic-skinned herald to surf into town and throw a wrench into their relationship. “I wouldn’t say the Surfer is in a love triangle with Sue and Reed, but there’s definitely a connection between Sue and the Surfer,” reveals Payne, who adds that Silver Surfer, a.k.a. Norrin Radd, will show up early on in the film with his Power Cosmic and quickly become sought after by a number of interested parties who want to know what his arrival means and what his purpose is. And comic fans can rest soundly, as the film aims to keep the shiny-skinned space rover’s look intact. “From what I’ve heard from [director] Tim [Story], Fox and Marvel, the look of the Silver Surfer is going to be as pure to the comics as any fan could hope for,” Payne states. While the Surfer’s origin will be touched on in the film, don’t expect an extended flashback explaining his relationship with Galactus. “I’m hoping that’s something that would be explored more fully if there’s a Surfer solo film, which I’m hoping there will be,” Payne says. If “Rise of the Silver Surfer” launches well, he may just get his chance to write it. “I’d love to,” he exclaims. “I would definitely like to see more of his origin, either in flashbacks to [his home world of] Zenn-La and [his lover] Shalla Bal and the sacrifice he had to make, or starting from there.” With all this talk of silvery goodness, let’s not forget a certain cloaked individual who got packed up and shipped off to Latveria at the end of the last film. Dr. Doom (Julian McMahon) will return as an adversary for the Four as well. Besides the fact “he will be unfrozen,” laughs Payne, “In the story, [Doom’s] got a very personal interest in the Silver Surfer and obviously a grudge against the FF. I think people will be happy in the direction he’s going in.” Payne also threw out a wink to comics fans with the inclusion of the Human Torch’s smoking new love interest, Frankie Raye, played by model-turned actress Beau Garrett. “The fact that in the comics she was linked to Galactus made it too good to pass on,” he says. And if there’s ever a third Fantastic Four movie, Payne has already got some ideas. “Oh man, there are so many good stories to choose from. If it were up to me, I’d love to do a story about Annihilus and the Negative Zone. Or the Skrulls—I love the Super Skrull. The Puppet Master would be a logical choice since he’s Alicia’s stepfather and therefore has a link already with the FF. I’d love to see the Inhumans. It would be really cool to see [the FF] go up against another group of superpowered beings because it’s something we haven’t seen before. I’d love to see the destruction of Black Bolt’s scream on the big screen. That would be awesome.” Info from www.wizarduniverse.com

Possible Spoiler SpaceTim Story interview in Total Film. Total Film Magazine recently caught up with director Tim Story, and Mr. Fantastic himself Ioan Gruffudd to discuss the upcoming movie Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. The article, which reveals some new specifics about some of the action sequences in the movie, should be avoided by anyone who doesn't want to be spoiled. Buzz feels Ioan Gruffudd's pain. He's trying to marry Jessica Alba, but it's not happening. The crucial difference here, though, is that Gruffudd is in character on the set of Fantastic Four 2. "We attempt to get married several times in the movie", sighs Gruffudd, "the beginning of the movie is the big wedding ceremony. Just as we're about to say 'I do', the whole world collapses and the Silver Surfer arrives" Ah, yes, the clue is in the title. FF2's new power player is the reason why everyone is hyped that the sequel will out dazzle the original. "This movie is probably three times bigger than the first", says Tim Story, "Theres the big Johnny/Surfer chase through New York. Another sequence where Dr. Doom battles the Fantastic Four in Shanghai, and then we've got an incredible sequence that involves the London Eye. It's pretty spectacular..." Possible Spoiler SpaceJones on Fantastic Four 2 and Hellboy 2 Source: Advanced Dark January 21, 2007 The Windsor Star has published a new interview with Doug Jones in which he talks about playing The Silver Surfer in the "Fantastic Four" sequel and Abe Sapien again in Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. Here's several clips from the article (Spoilers ahead!): "I'm interacting with the Fantastic Four quite a bit -- mostly with Jessica Alba, as Sue Storm. We have a three-page scene that's actually sweet and touching, when she's trying to get through to him." Here's the link, www.superherohype.com/news/hellboynews.php?id=5116McMahon on Doom in Fantastic Four 2 Source: Advanced Dark January 21, 2007 Julian McMahon revealed details about Dr. Doom in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer to DailyBulletin.com: "Two years have passed for Doom, trapped in this casket," McMahon says. "Needless to say, he's not happy." He's also not the only bad guy, competing with the powerful master of energy, the Silver Surfer (Doug Jones, who plays Pan and the Pale Man in "Pan's Labyrinth"). Doom being Doom, he doesn't want to play nice. He wants to take the Surfer's powers. "Doom hasn't changed he still wants to rule the world and kill the Fantastic Four," McMahon says. "He's a simple man, really. The great thing is, we don't have to waste any time establishing his character. You get the bad guy from the beginning. It's great demonic, cartoony stuff." The sequel opens in theaters on June 15. Here's the link, www.superherohype.com/news/fantasticfournews.php?id=5114

Possible Spoilers SpaceMichael Chiklis on Fantastic Four 2 Source: iFMagazine.com January 24, 2007 iFMagazine.com talked to Michael Chiklis about returning as The Thing in the Fantastic Four sequel. Here's a clip from the interview: What's fun about this time around, we didn't have to lay down the same amount of origin tale track. We could just get right into it. In this kind of situation they have to take certain liberties with the original, but it still adheres to the point where any hardcore FOUR fan is going to be satisfied and SILVER SURFER fans are going to be psyched out of their minds. Weta is doing the effects and they're an impressive house, just what I've seen so far of their effects is spectacular. Visit the link above for the full article! Possible Spoilers SpaceJohn Ottman Begins Work on Fantastic Four 2 Last July we brought you the scoop on John Ottman returning to score Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. John has now informed us that he has officially begun to work on the score for the movie, and has shared some of his thoughts about the score with us. On the Fan 4 Theme: "Now that I've started working on the film, it feels good to be in familiar territory. It looks as though there might be more areas this time around to squeeze in the Fan 4 theme, and there's also a possibility the film may have a full-fledged title sequence this time around so I can introduce the theme properly and get the adrenaline going as I had wanted to in the first film. As many know, in the 11th hour on the first film, the title sequence was cut out, and so the Fan 4 theme wasn't able to be introduced in the traditions of these types of films. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed. On the Silver Surfer and Previous Themes: What's fun about Fan 4 is that it's lighter fare which makes it easier to have fun musically without having to ride some careful darkly tinged line. The Silver Surfer offers new territory, and we're thinking of making his music a little more of a modern fusion between orchestra and electronics. It's too early to know exactly what I'll do yet. I also love how resurrecting the previous themes gives a cohesiveness between the two films, for instance the little love theme between Reed and Susan really keeps there personal story going from the first movie." Thanks to John for keeping us all up-to-date on his progress with the movie, we hope that he has a great time putting together the score, and look forward to hearing what he has come up with over the coming months. Possible Spoiler SpaceRalph Winter talks about Fantastic Four 2 How can you not be a fan of Ralph Winter? He gets to make all the cool movies! Here he chats us up about the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer, the future of the X-Men, and gives us The Screwtape Letters scoop! And did somebody say "Galactus"? Robin: It's been a few years since we last talked. How are things? What are you working on now? Ralph: Good, good. I just got back from Vancouver, working on Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. We're getting started with post-production on that. We've got other stuff going on, like getting [Ted Dekker's] Thr3e out. And I'm working on a lot of development, getting other projects up and running. How's Fantastic Four turning out? Very well. We finished shooting on December 20th. We're thick into post-production right now. It comes out June 15th. Silver Surfer is the new addition to the story, and he's getting a lot of attention. We had a teaser trailer attached to Night at the Museum, and we got a lot of positive response from that. Now we've just got to deliver the darn thing. (Laughs.) You know, there's a moment in that trailer, where if you freeze it on a close-up of the Surfer's face, you can catch a bit of a resemblance to Doug Jones. [Editor's note: Doug Jones is the actor who portrays the effects-driven Silver Surfer.] Yeah, yeah, a little. We're using Weta, who did Lord of the Rings, to do the CGI work for the Surfer, and Doug is heavily involved with providing motion capture and all that stuff. So is the Silver Surfer being visually achieved entirely through CGI? It's a combination of CGI, and some on-set motion capturing of Doug. Pulling this whole thing together is what Weta is charged with doing, and they'll be putting the final product into the scenes. This one's for all the Doug Jones fans out there, myself included: Will Doug's voice be the voice of the Silver Surfer? We don't know yet. We're not sure. That was clear up front, as part of Doug's contract. We don't really have a clear direction on that at the moment. We listened to a lot of different voices, and there's a possibility we may go with what Doug provided on-set. In the first draft of the script, the Silver Surfer wasn't going to speak at all. It was thought that that might make him more mysterious, and maybe he might say one or two words, or one or two sentences. And it's grown from that, but not that much. There's an air of mystery about him that we want to keep. That would be a decision that we're going to make in March or April. I can see how that would fit with the character. He's got kind of a standoffish, super-other-worldly power vibe, when we first meet him. Truly less is more. [Director] Tim Story is cutting the movie together now, so we'll see how all of that comes together. I think once we've seen the whole sweep of the movie -- how it plays, how it feels -- then we'll probably dig in and say, "What's the best way to handle Surfer and his arc? Does he talk more or talk less? Is it Doug's voice or someone else's voice?" I fully expect you to say no to this question... (Laughs.) (Laughs.) Can you tell us, in this version of the Silver Surfer's story, if he is still the herald of Galactus, as he is in the comics? Yeah. That is part of the story. That is part of what we talk about in the story. That is something our characters will discover along the way. But how that plays out -- whether we see Galactus, how much of Galactus you'll see -- I can't answer that question at the moment because we truly don't know. I'm not being coy, we just haven't made a decision yet. We want to cut the movie together, play it out, and see if that's necessary or needed, or if it's something we can play in another movie. There is no specific plan mapped out about Galactus right now, but that is definitely the reason that the Silver Surfer comes to earth. Sounds like the perfect setup for a third movie. Yeah, and that's what we want to play out. How well does this play without Galactus? There will be some fans who feel cheated if they don't get at least a glimpse of Galactus in there somewhere. Maybe. And we understand that. We don't want to disappoint anyone, but it is a tightrope. June 15th is coming quickly. We've sketched out ideas of what Galactus might look like, but we really have not yet made any decisions. We have to see the movie put together first, which should happen very soon. Galactus would be a whole other challenge in his own right, in how to pull off visually without being completely cheesy. That's right. Less is more with that as well. Info from www.infuzemag.com

Possible Spoilers SpaceIoan Gruffudd on Fantastic Four 2 Mr. Fantastic talks about the sequel ComingSoon.net has posted an exclusive new interview with Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer star Ioan Gruffudd (AKA Mr. Fantastic), in which he talks about the superhero sequel. Here's a clip: CS: Has a lot of time passed for the characters between the first movie and this one coming up? Gruffudd: I suppose yes. There's two years that's evolved in our lives as actors so I guess yes, time has passed, and we're now established firmly as the Fantastic Four in everybody's consciousness. We can't walk down the street without being followed by paparazzi, so we're really embracing the fact that these guys don't have their anonymity. They live amongst us in New York City, and they start to question that. Do they really want to live this life and have this pressure of being super heroes or would they like to live a life of solitude out in the countryside somewhere? So they grapple with that. Here's the link to the entire interview, www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=18987

Possible Spoilers SpaceMr. Fantastic Expands On Cradling Jessica Alba, Wearing Powdered Wigs Ioan Gruffudd also hints at 'Silver Surfer' secrets, including possible Galactus appearance. BEVERLY HILLS, California — We all knew Mr. Fantastic could stretch, but who knew he could go this far? In Michael Apted's "Amazing Grace," fast-rising star Ioan Gruffudd portrays William Wilberforce, the revolutionary who helped end the British slave trade. Come June, he'll move back into summer-blockbuster territory, once again portraying Reed Richards in "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer." We caught up with the charismatic actor recently for some invaluable advice on how to pull off a powdered wig, work a dance number into a superhero movie — and get away with groping Jessica Alba. MTV: First we see you with Mr. Fantastic's streaks, and now you've got a powdered wig. Why is Hollywood fascinated with giving you gray hair? Ioan Gruffudd: [He laughs.] I've wondered the same thing! To me, I always insist on having a costume, of some nature, in everything I do. Even if it's blue spandex or a theater costume — and of course, part and parcel of that is the wig. MTV: Do you expect your fame as Mr. Fantastic to draw a different audience than could normally be expected for a biopic on an 18th British abolitionist? Gruffudd: That is something that has presented itself since we started promoting ["Grace"], is, "Damn, we should be taking advantage of the fact that I am Mr. Fantastic!" So we've been pushing talking about both movies in the same breath, absolutely. MTV: Even beneath your powdered wig, you're wearing other wigs. How many hairpieces were you dragging around? Gruffudd: Well, when I was playing young Wilberforce in Parliament, that was just a wig to represent real hair. Then, of course, you've got the wigs that they put on for the powdered wigs. You've just got to get over the way you look in them to begin with, and then get over them sticking on your head. Inevitably, the wind gets hold of any wig, so sometimes it would blow off and pose a lot of fun incidents. MTV: So we can look forward to some fun deleted scenes on the DVD, perhaps? Gruffudd: [He laughs.] Loads, loads. MTV: Wilberforce was handed great wealth, fame and comfort in his early 20s, then nearly threw it all away to free the slaves. Watching the film, you can't help but wonder whether you'd be brave enough to do the same. Gruffudd: That's what makes these people so great. I would put him in the same category as Nelson Mandela or Gandhi or Dr. Martin Luther King, who stood up and had their voices heard against insurmountable odds. MTV: The title comes from the classic hymn, and you display a wonderful singing voice in this film. Is that all you? Gruffudd: All of it, in its entirety, is me. Yes. It was recorded live. MTV: Is it your hope that the Marvel Comics people get a look at it and give Mr. Fantastic a musical number? Gruffudd: [He laughs.] Yes, maybe a little bit of singing for the third movie, yeah. MTV: What would be the perfect song for Mr. Fantastic to sing? Gruffudd: [He laughs.] I don't know ... "Twist and Shout"? He could literally twist as he sang it. MTV: If you had Mr. Fantastic's powers in real life, what would you do with them? Gruffudd: You'd be able to play some great pranks on people from another room, wouldn't you? You'd be able to reach over and tap them on the shoulder and freak them out! You could also reach into the refrigerator and get another Diet Coke — or beer, in my circumstance. MTV: You've killed so much time with her on these sets, so give the single guys out there some help: What's the best way to Jessica Alba's heart? Gruffudd: It's gotta be her sense of humor. She calls me the big, goofy guy. I try to make her laugh and she's like, "You're so silly!" MTV: What's the easiest way to make her laugh? Gruffudd: The one thing that always makes her laugh is when I do my "dirty old man." MTV: Excuse me? Gruffudd: [He laughs.] I've got my tongue sticking out, I'm trying to make the ugliest face possible, and I'm chasing after her and trying to grope her. But, of course, I never catch her because I'm an old, withering man. That always makes her laugh. MTV: The Silver Surfer looks amazing in the trailer for the "Fantastic Four" sequel. But how will Mr. Fantastic be different this time around? Gruffudd: He becomes the leader that we know and love from the comic books. As much as he is a scientist and could be deemed a bit of a nerd, he has now stepped into those boots of being the leader — everybody looks to him for leadership throughout this movie. You'll see the evolution of him, because at the beginning of the movie he's very excited about getting married [to Alba's Invisible Woman] and slightly nervous, as he was in the first one. Then, once the Silver Surfer arrives, he is a man of action. He steps into the breach, as it were, and takes him on. MTV: What's the one scene in "Surfer" that you can't wait for the world to see? Gruffudd: I'm looking forward to everyone seeing the last scene of the movie. When we were shooting it, I thought it was so spectacular to the naked eye — I can only imagine what it's going to look like on the big screen. We had everything there: lighting effects, rain, wind machines, it was just fantastic ... I got to cradle Jessica Alba for like two or three weeks whilst we were shooting the last sequence. MTV: Will this big finale somehow involve Galactus? Gruffudd: Possibly. [He laughs.] ... He will have a great presence in the movie, yeah, certainly. Info from www.mtv.com

I just saw the trailer on TV...Seen parts of it on the net a while back but this one was different. I'm sorry...but I think Jessica looked horrible with that wig on She looked SO much better in the first movie...I'll go see it this time but it won't be like the first one where I went to see it cause she was in it, I'll go see it for the effects...I just think she made a poor decision about wearing that wig...she looks terrible with it and doesn't look like Sue Storm anymore IMO Don't get mad at me cause of this as it is my opinion
