James Cameron And Cast Promote "Sanctum" In Sydney January 12, 2011 - The Entertainment Quarter Sydney, Australia Water, Water Everywhere James Cameron talks 3-D adventure 'Sanctum' What is "Sanctum"? It's an Australian-made action-adventure film, based on a true story, that finds a group of cave explorers trapped in a life-threatening situation when the massive abyss they are probing gets flooded by a tropical storm, forcing the explorers to navigate a treacherous underground escape route through rising waters. The film is written and produced by renowned cave explorer Andrew Wight, based on his own experiences, and directed by Alister Grierson. There are no actors really familiar to American audiences except perhaps for Ioan Gruffudd, best known for playing Reed Richards in the "Fantastic Four" movies. Oh, and one other thing: The executive producer is James Cameron, who gave the production the same 3-D cameras with which he shot "Avatar" to film this story. The goal? To make "Sanctum" a completely immersive and sensory experience on the screen -- at about one-fifteenth of his sci-fi epic's budget, showing that films shot in 3-D don't necessarily have to be budget-busters. Cameron, Grierson and Wight were on hand at Universal Studios Hollywood last week to show selected media outlets, including MSN, a handful of scenes from the film via the "Sanctum Mobile Experience," a trailer that's been souped up as a 3-D theater and is going around the country to promote the film's Feb. 4 release. While "Sanctum" is not sci-fi in any sense -- and nor does it have any connection to Cameron's so-weird-they're-almost-sci-fi explorations of the oceans depths like "Aliens of the Deep" -- the presence of Cameron, his enthusiasm for the project and his continued godfathering of 3-D as a viable cinematic force made this worth a look. A trailer and three scenes were shown: In the first scene, two of the actors rappel down the side of the vast chasm, while Ioan Gruffudd parachutes down to show he can beat them to the bottom. In the second, the team is beset by torrential floodwaters as they attempt to climb from one level of the caves to the next, boulders tumbling around them. In the third (and, in our opinion, best) sequence, actor Rhys Wakefield swims underwater through the caves, sucking tiny amounts of oxygen from trapped air pockets as he navigates the eerily beautiful labyrinth. During the Q&A session afterwards, Cameron said that he thought 3-D was actually more effective on a claustrophobic film like "Sanctum" than it was in "Avatar." "'Avatar' had so many broad vistas that the difference between watching the movie in 2-D and in 3-D is not that great, because the more expansive the image, the less you feel in close contact with objects and characters," he explained. "It's the intimate scenes in Avatar, where just a couple people are talking or going through the jungle with close pass-bys of plants and things like that, that were really the most effective in 3-D, and not the big, wide flying shots or the broad canvas stuff or the big battle scenes. We knew that going in. The difference between experiencing 'Sanctum' in 2-D and 3-D is actually much greater because the 3-D will constantly be informing you, in the experience of watching the movie, with the sense of claustrophobia. 3-D works best in small spaces." The discussion also gave Cameron the chance to expound on where he thinks the future of 3-D filmmaking is headed, in the wake of his breakthrough use on "Avatar" and the less-than-stellar 3-D conversions that have arguably hurt films like "Clash of the Titans" and "The Last Airbender." After talking for a bit about the arrival of 3-D television (which has actually gotten off to a slow start in the marketplace) the director remarked, "Right now, we're seeing an explosive, almost vertical curve in the number of people who are learning to do (3-D) and are working with it. I have a small company, partnered with Vince Pace, where we developed the Fusion cameras, and all of our rigs are out, all the time. We have to expand much more rapidly than we thought we were going to. We'll literally be building hundreds of camera systems in the next year to service the demand. The number of screens has doubled in America, and it's more than doubled worldwide, since 'Avatar' came out. Think what we could have made! "There have been a lot of naysayers," Cameron continued. "People love to grumble and be negative about 3-D. They love to say, 'Conversion has hurt it. It's just a flash in the pan. The market is retreating.' That's all bull. There were some dips, but they were dips in the growth curve. It's never stopped growing. It's continued to grow ... I think that these fast conversions that are done during post-production are still a problem. Some studios are still going that route, although most people have started to veer toward native 3-D production." Wight chimed in, saying, "We've just demonstrated that you can do it on a modestly budgeted film, and do it well. There's no compromise in the quality of the 3-D. I think, if you look at cinema, there have been lots of incremental steps. You have silent movies, black-and-white, sound in mono and then in stereo, and then there was color. They're all incremental steps. And then, you've got 3-D. But, if you start peeling all those steps back, you start to understand how 3-D is really going to make a difference." Cameron did not discuss "Avatar 2" and "Avatar 3," which are about to take up the next five years of his life (he's also producing the Guillermo del Toro dream project "At the Mountains of Madness"), but he did add that "Sanctum" was the "anti-'Avatar' in a way," depending less on special effects than physical action and drama. As for Wight, the man whose escape from death inspired the film, he simply added, "Even though it superficially looks like an action-adventure boys movie, it actually works on a much deeper level than that. There's a lot going on in the movie, and it's very visceral because the 3-D draws you into the action and it's an environment that most people have never seen and probably, after watching the film, never want to see, but you feel like you've been to place and you've been emotionally moved."
