BATHING BEAUTY
"Everyone in my family is heavily overweight," Alba (in Miami in January) has said. To keep her figure toned, she leaves desserts and bread off the menu, drinks three liters of water a day and tries to work out daily. Alba is a fan of Tae Bo and elliptical machines. "I work out more when I'm going to be photographed in a bathing suit," she admits.
LITTLE REBEL
Alba grew up a military brat, bouncing from base to base with her father, Mark (in 2003). Now daddy's little girl is all grown up: On a March appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, Alba said her father – an Air Force staff sergeant – was concerned about her posing nude for April's GQ. She went ahead and did it anyway.
GIRLS' DAY OUT
The actress credits mom Cathy (in 2003) with her love for makeup. "My mom's a southern girl who comes from the school that you don't leave the house without your face on," Alba told InStyle. Her mother is of French, Danish and Canadian descent, while dad Mark gives her his Mexican heritage.
KIDDING AROUND
She's no typical Hollywood sweetheart: Alba (at a benefit event in L.A. in 2004) is known for telling "really gross jokes," says her Dark Angel costar Valarie Rae Miller. But when she's good, Alba's really good, giving time to favorite causes including Step Up Women's Network, a nonprofit that raises money to aid cancer research and stem domestic violence.
REVEL, REVEL
Alba rang in 2005 by hosting a party at hip Miami club Prive with her pal, Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria (left), and Lindsay Lohan.
FIT FOR SIN
To learn the provocative moves for her role as lasso-wielding stripper Nancy Callahan in the crime thriller Sin City, Alba went to the source: She "had some Texans teach me how to rope" and checked out the action at strip clubs in Miami, Los Angeles and New York.
GETTING IT
"There are so many talented people. I'm just lucky," says Alba (in New York City in March) of her career. She has been acting since she was 12. Two years later, she won a starring role on the 1995-96 family show Flipper.
THE ENTERTAINER
Alba (in Beverly Hills in May) likes making a connection with her fans. "I don't entertain and act for myself or else I would just act in front of the mirror," she says. "I like having an audience and people being affected by stuff that I'm in. I love entertaining."
